I develop frameworks and practical tools to help patients use AI on their own terms.
I’m Hugo Campos, a research partner and patient advocate. I’m seeking a funded research home to develop patient-directed AI and put Critical AI Health Literacy into practice.
My work asks who directs an AI system, whose interests it serves, and what patients can actually do with it. I connect patient agency, health data rights, and Critical AI Health Literacy through practical tools and collaborative inquiry.
I’m interested in a part-time research appointment, funded fellowship, or sustained paid collaboration, with protected time to develop and evaluate this work with patients and colleagues.
From framework to practice
Critical AI Health Literacy
CAIHL examines AI through patient agency, power, and the conditions that shape people’s choices. My work includes a commentary co-authored with Liz Salmi and a reusable skill that brings the framework into everyday analysis. My next priority is developing and evaluating practical implementations with patients.
OpenKP
OpenKP connects my Kaiser Permanente Northern California health record to AI tools under my control. It gives colleagues a concrete example to examine as we study how patients direct AI around their own questions and data.
HugoScore
HugoScore is a public prototype for examining health AI through patient agency. It asks whose interests a tool serves and whether it expands or constrains people’s ability to understand, question, decide, and act. Further development and evaluation remain part of the work.
A research home for this work
I’d like to work with colleagues and patients on a focused implementation project, with protected time for inquiry, development, and shared learning.
